Project COBRA'33
Project COBRA'33 will be teamed with an Automatic Transmission from the Ford Motor Company. That is to stay, we will use a 4R70W 4-speed electronic shift overdrive transmission just like the one they placed into service on the Mach 1's. These transmissions is a very robust , it's also the same trany they use in many F-150's and Explorers.
I wanted COBRA'33 to be as modern and cutting edge as possible, so that is why I chose to run this transmission. It will be quicker then a manual transmission equipped car and much nicer to drive. With the use of the on board electronics, we can alter the shift points, firm them up if we want and control how the transmission well perform. It just makes for a much better street rod. Also, the web is full of posters wanting information on how they can keep there clutch in there 03-04 Cobras. Even at factory HP levels, many are having a hard time making their clutches live. Couple this with our planed HP rating of 600+, and the small interior room, the clutch and manual transmission just doesn't make any sense to me.
I have always been a fan of automatics. I like the torque multiplication you get (up to 40%) and the quickness they possess. To many have only experienced an automatic in under powered automobiles. I have an Automatic Transmission in my Dodge diesel, and it's very fast. Yes it's been replaced with an stage V ATS unit, but that's only because Dodge was too cheap to build it right.
We purchased our Automatic Transmission for Project COBRA'33 from the good folks at Performance Automotive & Transmission Center. They were a pleasure to work with and very helpful in guiding us toward the right transmission for our needs.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

This beautiful Red Powder Coated Automatic Transmission is just one of the many turned out by Performance Automotive. Red & Black are standard power coating colors, but they can match most custom color on request.

AODE/4R70W INTERCEPTOR
It comes with a special pressure solenoid, which has higher pressure than the stock solenoid and a performance pressure regulator spring. This is the main cause of clutch failure in the AODE / 4R70W transmission. The roller clutch is removed and replaced with a heavy-duty mechanical diode with a Spiral "Plus" Ring Kit. This is the weak point on the 1992-1998 AODE / 4R70W transmissions and needs to be replaced for any high performance / heavy duty use. Two extra clutches are added to the direct clutch drum, that gives 33% more holding power (Alto Red Eagle Power Pack). This transmission has a high performance Fairbanks TransAction Kit and an oversize overdrive servo. The stock overdrive band is replaced with a Raybestos Pro Series Kevlar band. A new heavy-duty torque converter is included in this package deal. It has a larger than stock Luk clutch lining that is far better than the stock converter (#13). Can be ordered with stall speeds up to 2500 RPM for an extra $101.00. This transmission takes care of all the weak points in the stock AODE / 4R70W transmissions and is a must for high performance Mustangs. Good for motors up to 550 horse power using pump gasoline
WHAT ALL GOES INTO A PERFORMANCE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ??
MECHANICAL DIODE
Extreme Duty mechanical diode conversion kit for 1992 - 1998 AODE and 4R70W transmissions. Replace your roller clutch with the much stronger mechanical diode. This is a weak point on early pre 1999 A0DE / 4R70W transmissions.

SNAP RINGS
Loss of the stock AOD / AODE snap ring off the intermediate sprag retainer causing failure of the sprag. The AOD / AOD-E Spiral "Plus" Ring Kit is designed not to fly off the intermediate sprag even under high RPM. This New Millennium design features a two-piece set with the Spiral Ring and a G-Lock ring that dramatically increases holding capacity of the retaining rings.

IMPROVED SUN GEAR

IMPROVED CLUTCH PACK
AOD / AODE / 4R70W Six clutch stamped steel direct drum. Fits 1990 on AOD transmissions with a stamped steel direct clutch drum and all AODE / 4R70E transmissions. Holds 6 full thickness direct clutches. Comes with steels, piston and backing plate.

SERVO
AOD / AODE Servo Pins with O-rings. Forward clutch failure and overdrive band failure can be the result of servo-pin-to-case-bore clearance. This excessive clearance allows leakage of release oil, which is forward clutch oil. This leakage reduces forward oil pressure and can allow overdrive band drag in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. Replace the OEM servo pin with a Sonnax pin which has an o-ring to positively seal against the case bore. A snap ring has been provided to secure the piston to the pin. The AODE pin on left has 2 O-rings. The AOD pin on right has 1 O-ring

ALTO RED EAGLE CLUTCHES
Direct (3rd) Alto Red Eagle Power Pack clutch set for AOD / AODE / 4R70W transmissions. Fits some 1990 to 1993 AOD with stamped steel drum. This clutch set has 8 clutches. Which is 33% more apply area than the stock transmission.

Intermediate (2nd) Alto Red Eagle Power Pack clutch set for AOD / AODE / 4R70W transmissions. RedEagle clutches and Kolene steels.

Reverse Alto Red Eagle Power Pack clutch set for AOD / AODE / 4R70W transmissions. Fits some 1990 to 1993 AOD transmissions with stamped steel reverse drums. Provides more friction surface for torque enhancement and the ability to provide better heat dissipation, for longer clutch pack life. This kit will also improve the performance of a trans brake. Changes a 4 plate drum to a 5 plate drum.
THRUST BEARINGS
AODE / 4R70W torrington thrust bearing kits. All bearings have a reasonable service life of 100,000 to 200,000 miles.

HARDENED INTERMEDIATE SHAFT
Extreme Duty extra hard intermediate shaft for AODE / 4R70W / A O Dominator transmissions. This shaft is our own brand. This is a must for high horse power units. The big end is bad about snapping off. This is the one found in the A O Dominator. Can be added to the Interceptor transmission as an upgrade. This shaft is made from 300M material and cryogenically hardened.

4R70W FAIRBANKS TRANSACTION KIT
AODE / 4R70W Fairbanks high performance TransAction Kit. Fits 1991 to 2002. This TransAction kit includes a newly designed OD servo piston and a no leak performance design 2-3 accumulator piston. Includes steel boost valve and sleeve to replace worn OEM. This is the same kit we use in the Interceptor transmissions.

AOD-E / 4R70W Pressure Regular Valve
#8S. The OE. valve will wear the end of the valve land and the edge surface of the valve body bore. This wear causes a loss of line pressure and boost response. Our valve extends the problem land area where the wear occurs and moves the working area more into the valve body bore that has not worn. The extended land gives the valve more stability to help prevent future wear. This valve will work on all years 1992 through 2005

OVERDRIVE BAND
AODE / 4R70W Carbon Fiber overdrive band. This is the band used in the A O Dominator and Interceptor transmissions. The premium band is constructed of carbon fibers along with solids and resins that enhance band performance. Carbon Fiber bands are the perfect upgrade for heavy duty, towing and high performance rebuilds.
1-2 ACCUMULATOR PISTON
AODE / 4R70W Sonnax 1-2 accumulator piston is a direct OEM replacement. The bonded rubber piston seals will resolve leakage between the piston O.D. and the case bore. Applications in which this piston assembly is used are the AODE and 4R70W transmissions.

2-3 ACCUMULATOR PISTON
AODE / 4R70W Sonnax 2-3 accumulator piston is a direct OEM replacement. The bonded rubber piston seals will prevent leakage between the piston O.D. and the case bore. This piston assembly is used in AODE and 4R70W transmissions.

EXTRA DEEP TRANSMISSION PAN
Deep Cast Aluminum Pan fits A O Dominator, AOD, 4R70W and AODE Transmissions. Volume: 3 qts. over stock for AOD transmissions and 2 qts. over stock for AODE / 4R70W transmissions. Shown in as-cast finish.

SEALS
Set of lip seal protectors for installing the rubber lip seals & square cut seals in the drums. Fits AOD, AODE and 4R70W transmissions.

TRANSMISSION COOLER
We will be running an auxiliary Automatic Transmission cooler. This simple diagram will show the route the fluid takes. Only difference will be that instead of the auxiliary (B&M cooler) being mounted up front and on the radiator, we will mount the cooler to the side of the chassis, and the cooler will have it's own electric fan and thermostat.

The fluid leaves the Automatic Transmission and goes up front to the radiator, where there is a special transmission oil cooler built-into the radiator core. There the engine coolant removes most of the heat and the fluid leaves the cooler and goes on down the line to the Auxiliary Cooler. Our Auxiliary Transmission Cooler is a B&M Hi-Tec Transmission Cooler with built-in electric fan and thermostat. Here the fluid will enter the cooler, if the temperature of the fluid is above 185°F, the cooler will automatically turn it's self on. It will remain on till the fluid temperatures fall below 165°f, then it will turn it's self off. The fluid leaves the B&M Hi-Tek cooler and returns to the Automatic Transmission where the cooled fluid enter the system and lubbercates and cools the internals, the process then simply keeps repeating itself.
